Description

Right now Bitmovin player is able to support TTML / EBU-TT-D and IMSC subtitles in multiple platforms but the official support table for this formats only report support in Chrome for PD (Parsing and basic displaying) Subtitles & Captions Support. We know they work in other platform because we test them but they are not working properly. So the feature is there but not completed.

EBU-TT-D is the subtitle format mandated for millions of connected devices across Europe (HbbTV ones). It supports the language and script layout requirements for most languages, and the styling, timing and positioning requirements for hard of hearing and translation subtitles. It is an easier-to-implement target than IMSC Text, because it is more constrained. However, if Bitmovin also wants to support subtitles that meet global script layout requirements they should target IMSC Text, and EBU-TT-D subtitles will play fine in an IMSC Text player too.

We know that companies like BBC use them and we believe Netflix and Amazon Prime use TTML-based subtitles - most likely IMSC Text profile.

Thanks @javier.fernandez, firstly for joining the community!

We appreciate the insight into your requirement for better subtitle support for TTML/EBU-TT-D formats.

While this isn’t on our roadmap right now, we’ll be monitoring for customer interest going forward and we’ll keep you updated should that change.

Many thanks,
Jacob
