Is there any reason to keep encoding files, and other files (input, manifests, etc.) after the encoding is complete?
Hello Pat, thank you for your question.
When an encoding is complete, that means in FINISHED state, it is up to the customer what to do with the input and output files.
If you don’t want to re-encode the asset at any forseeable time, it is safe to remove the asset from the input bucket and store it in some other kind of archive that you might want to maintain.
As the output files are the result of the encoding and the reason why you performed the encoding, you can keep them or move them to another location, e.g.to your CDN origin server for streamable formats or to the next step of your downstream workflow. If there are manifests and segments involved, make sure that after the move, the manifests still point to the right path to access the segments.
As far as Bitmovin is involved, the input and output files are no longer needed after the encoding is successfully FINISHED.
Note that the encoding record itself has a retention period of 90 days, after which we may delete the record automatically on our discretion.
Thank you very much and kind regards - Peter
