Hello Vinayak,

thank you very much for your question. The answer is: it depends, mainly on the codec, the frame rate and the type of content you are encoding.

I see that you want to encode 4k content. For this, it is recommended to use the H.265 (HEVC) codec. A widely respected authoring specification for a 4k H265 static ladder comes from Apple, who recommend this ladder. The numbers are in kbps.

Note: Please start using the numbers in the HEVC/H.265 30 fps column, e.g. 8,100 kbps for the 2560x1440 resolution.

Note that you can get this ladder from Apple’s website, which also contains a recommended ladder for HD (1080p) content encoded with H.264.

You can try this with our Bitmovin Encoding Wizard. For this, log in to your Bitmovin account (or create a trial for free), go to VOD encoding and click on “+ Create New Encoding”.

That all said, Bitmovin recommends Per-title. Here, the Bitmovin encoder will analyze your content first and then create an optimized ladder for that content. If you want to learn more about this, please contact me!

We are happy to help setting up your VOD encodings. Please let us know of any questions you have.

Kind regards - Peter
